General Information

Located on Vancouver Island just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) is in the ancestral and unceded territories of First Nations including the Quw'utsun, Malahat, Ts'uubaa-asatx, Halalt, Penelakut, Stz'uminus, Lyackson, Pauquachin, Ditidaht, and Pacheedaht Nations. Local First Nations Peoples have stewarded the lands, waters, plants, and animals of this region since beyond time immemorial. The CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 95,000. The picturesque Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate and numerous parks, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities such as majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles.

 

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates as a temporary full time, Environmental Technologist II, up to 14-18 months with the possibility for extension to fill a maternity leave, in the Recycling & Waste Management Division within the Operations Department.

 

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Recycling and Waste Management, the Environmental Technologist II is responsible for developing and implementing waste reduction and environmental programs to fulfill the objectives of regional plans and priorities.  Work involves the dissemination of information, and the development and coordination of various initiatives, promotion campaigns, and education programs.

 

The focus of this position is the three-stream curbside collection service in CVRD’s Electoral Areas.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized technical institute or community college in a related field; preferably general experience in environmental studies or civil engineering in a local government setting.
  • Eligible for membership in the ASTT as a technologist/technician, or a combination of education and appropriate training and experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related job or work experience in a similar field.
  • WHMIS Certificate – provided by employer
  • First Aid Level I with CPR C
  • Possession of a valid BC Drivers' Licence

Hours of Work

This temporary position is anticipated to start in mid February and is guaranteed 35 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and may be required to attend some evening and weekend meetings. This position is currently eligible to participate in the Flextime Program.

 

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the CVRD has a Work From Home program. This program allows staff to work remotely, with the number of remote days per week determined by operational requirements, from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a CVRD worksite. This position works from the CVRD's main office in Duncan, BC, and at this time, is eligible to be part of the Work From Home program, potentially working a hybrid in-office and remote schedule after a successful in-office training period. Please note, this is not a fully remote position – regular in-office presence is required

Salary

Wage rate in 3 steps as per the Collective Agreement between the CVRD and CUPE Local 358, $44.67 - $46.04 - $47.37 per hour (2025 rates). Benefits are included as per the CUPE Collective Agreement. A comprehensive benefits package is offered with this position.
