Located on Vancouver Island just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) is in the ancestral and unceded territories of First Nations including the Quw'utsun, Malahat, Ts'uubaa-asatx, Halalt, Penelakut, Stz'uminus, Lyackson, Pauquachin, Ditidaht and Pacheedaht Nations. A regular full time Senior Environmental Technologist position is available in the Recycling and Waste Management Division within the Operations Department at the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Reporting to the Senior Manager, Recycling & Waste Management Division, the Senior Environmental Technologist is responsible for closely assisting the Manager with a wide range of technical and administrative tasks related to the recycling and solid waste functions. Work includes planning, coordinating, and participating in various phases of facility development; identification of priority projects; preparation of annual departmental budgets; directing major reports and feasibility studies; and supporting the Manager in the ongoing workload related to the administering of the Solid Waste Management Plan.

Qualifications

  • Post secondary degree or diploma in environmental studies, engineering, planning or related field, or an equivalent of appropriate post secondary education, training and experience.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of general experience in waste management and/or environmental programs, including experience in the supervision of personnel, or an equivalent amount of appropriate training and experience.
  • Preferably extensive experience in written and verbal presentations, contract negotiations, administrative procedures, long-term planning, annual budget preparation, report generation, media relations, and targeted promotion and education campaigns preferably in a municipal setting.
  • Possession of a valid BC Drivers' Licence
  • WHMIS Certificate – provided by employer

Hours of Work

The hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position may be required to attend some evening and weekend meetings and is eligible to participate in the flex time program.  This position is also eligible for a partial Work-From-Home consideration after completion of a probationary period.

Salary

This unionized position (CUPE Local 358) has a salary range in three steps $52.88 - $54.47 - $56.08 per hour (2025 rates). Benefits are included as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
