General Information

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications for casual Equipment Operator II opportunities in the Recycling & Waste Management Division within the Operations Department. Reporting to the Manager, Solid Waste Operations, and receiving direction and supervision from the Recycling Attendant V, the Equipment Operator II contributes to the effective operation of CVRD Recycling Facilities by accurately and efficiently operating the excavator, front end loader and yard tractor and performs other related functions of the transfer facility.  This position directs commercial haulers in depositing their waste and recyclables in the appropriate area(s), and performs tasks to ensure those materials and the overall facility are well maintained in order to provide a safe and efficient environment.

Qualifications

  • Secondary School graduation or equivalent
  • Keyboarding and basic office equipment training
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience with:
    1. Working in an industrial workplace including around traffic and heavy industrial equipment
    2. Operating heavy industrial equipment including:
      • Minimum 480 hours of excavator operation experience
      • Minimum 480 hours of front-end loader operation experience
      • Minimum 480 hours of skid steer operation experience
      • Minimum 480 hours of Class 3 driving experience
  • Experience with data entry and computer systems
  • Valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement
  • Basic First Aid Certificate (previously First Aid Level 1)
  • Excavator Operator Safety Training certificate from a qualified instructor – employer provided
  • Front End Loader Operator Safety Training certificate from a qualified instructor – employer provided
  • Skid Steer Operator Safety Training certificate from a qualified instructor – employer provided
  • Traffic Control Persons Training – employer provided
  • WHMIS – employer provided

Hours of Work

As this is a casual, on-call opportunity there are no guaranteed hours of work. Shifts are scheduled based on operational need. The successful candidate must be able to work a flexible variety of hours and shifts and must be available for a minimum of 2 days per week between Monday-Friday.

Salary

This position is unionized (USW Local 1-1937) with wage rate in 2 steps, $33.98 - $36.38 per hour (2023 rates), plus an additional 14% pay in lieu of vacation, benefits and statutory holidays.

*Note: 2025 wage rates are still being negotiated.
