The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates to work as a Camp Assistant at Cowichan Lake Recreation for summer 2025. This is a great opportunity for those seeking to gain experience in the recreation and childcare field.  Our summer positions provide the opportunity for you to learn and be mentored by experienced staff, gain valuable coaching feedback/support throughout your employment and gain valuable training courses that can be utilized in our future careers. Under the supervision of the Recreation Programmer II, the Camp Assistant assists the Camp Leader with the weekly camps at the recreation centre. This position assists with: encouraging children in positive & safe play; the general supervision of participants; general set-up/take-down of day camps; and maintaining overall tidiness. There is an educational component to daily activities plus encouragement to become more active and promoting physical literacy and healthier lifestyles.

• Preferred candidates are enrolled in school and have completed Grade 10.
• A first aid with child CPR certificate (if under age 16, the Emergency for Community Care Certificate) is required.
• Theoretical or practical experience with assisting running children’s activities, and experience in dealing with children ages 6-12 including safety & prevention and program content & delivery are required.
• The successful candidate is enthusiastic, energetic and enjoys working with children.
• The successful candidate also possesses the ability to:
  • Establish and maintain a respectful, fun relationship with children while maintaining a position of authority.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, managers, and the general public.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing when communicating with children, parents and supervisors including receiving and following directions given regarding work activities.
  • Work under supervision as a member of a team.
• Preference will be given to candidates aged 15-30 years as per the Canada Summer Jobs Program through Service Canada, however candidates outside of this age range will be considered and are encouraged to apply.

This position is available for a period of 10 weeks commencing June 23, 2025 and continuing until August 29, 2025, subject to enrolment and funding. Hours of work may be scheduled based on enrolment and may vary up to 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Additional part-time or casual, on-call opportunities may also be available.

This temporary position is non-union, and is compensated at $23.18 per hour (2025 rate), which is $19.79 per hour plus 6% pay in lieu of benefits, 6% pay in lieu of vacation and 5.2% pay in lieu of statutory holidays.
