General Information

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates to work as a Utilities Operations Worker in the Utilities Division for summer 2025. Reporting to the Manager of Utility Operations, and supervised by the Senior Operator, the Utilities Operations Worker assists Division staff with the safe and efficient operation and routine maintenance of water and sewer systems.

Qualifications

  • Preferred candidates will be enrolled in a certified Water/Wastewater Operators or similar Trades Program, however candidates enrolled in any program will be considerd.
  • Successful candidates possess working knowledge of the safe use of hand-held equipment used in painting, construction and landscaping; rough construction, landscape installation and maintenance techniques; and, motorized equipment.
  • A valid Class 5 BC drivers' license and First Aid Level I with CPR Certificate are required.
  • The successful candidate is physically fit and possess:
    • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, mangers, and the general public.
    • The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Effective organizational skills.
    • The ability to listen to and follow directions.
    • The ability to work independently as well as a part of a team.
  • Preference will be given to candidates aged 15-30 years as per the Canada Summer Jobs Program through Service Canada, however candidates outside of this age range will be considered.

Hours of Work

This position is available for a period of 17 weeks commencing May 5, 2025 and continuing until August 29, 2025, subject to funding. Hours of work are 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. The position may be utilized by a co-op student and the start and end dates are negotiable.

Salary

This temporary position is unionized (USW Local 1-1937), and is compensated at $23.92 per hour (2023 rate). Additionally, this position will receive 14% in lieu of benefits, statutory holidays and vacation, bringing the compensation to $27.28 per hour. *please note that 2025 wage rates are currently being negotiated.
