Majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island, the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80,000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications for the temporary full-time Local FireSmart Representative position with Emergency Management Cowichan within the Strategic Services Department. This temporary grant-funded position is expected to run until September 2026.

Reporting to the Manager - Emergency Operations & Planning and supervised by the FireSmart Coordinator, the Local FireSmart Representative will assist in the implementation and maintenance of the Cowichan FireSmart program. The position will manage objectives under the Community Wildfire Prevention Plan (CWPP) by planning, organizing, and facilitating FireSmart activities and educational programs to the public, including identifying and engaging volunteer neighborhood FireSmart champions. The Local FireSmart Representative will lead the completion of FireSmart assessments, mitigation activities and post-mitigation assessments/scorecards for residential properties and community assets and infrastructure.

• Diploma or degree in Forestry, Resource Management, Emergency Management or related field
• Some related FireSmart and/or wildfire management behaviour experience
• Some related public relations experience including public promotion, facilitation, presentation delivery and volunteer management
• Valid First Aid and CPR
• Valid BC Class 5 Drivers’ License – employee needs to have access to reliable transportation
• FireSmart 101
• Certification as a Local FireSmart Representative (LFR) is strongly preferred
• An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered

Guaranteed 35 hours per week. Applicants must be available to work a variety of shifts to meet operational requirements including days, evenings and weekends. 

This position is based out of Emergency Management Cowichan’s office in Duncan, BC, and includes field work in locations around the Cowichan Valley.

Wage rate in 3 steps as per the Collective Agreement between the CVRD and CUPE Local 358, $38.84 - $39.95 - $41.15 per hour (2024 rates). Benefits (or 6% pay in lieu of benefits until eligible) and 6% pay in lieu of vacation are included as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
