General Information

Majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island, the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80,000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. Just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate and numerous parks, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities.

 

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications for the regular full-time Environmental Services Technician position in the Environmental Services Division within the Strategic Services Department.

 

Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Services Division, the Environmental Services Technician is responsible for performing a wide variety of technical, operational, and research tasks related to the objectives of the Environmental Services Division. This includes assisting with Division strategies, programs, and projects via conducting field work, data collection, measuring environmental indicators, and maintaining field equipment; performing preliminary data analysis and assisting with the interpretation of results; assisting with coordinating and facilitating various public and/or stakeholder meetings; assisting with grant applications; drafting reports and preparing displays and public information material including making public presentations; working with consultants; and aiding in partnerships to support environmental stewardship and protection.

 

This position will primarily be supporting the Drinking Water and Watershed Protection (DWWP) program (although work in other areas may also be assigned) so knowledge and experience in water and watershed science are considered particular assets.

Qualifications

  • 2-year diploma from a recognized technical institute or community college in environmental sciences or a related field
  • Membership / eligible for membership in the ASTTBC as a technologist / technician is considered an asset
  • 2 years’ prior job-related experience in a similar position
  • Experience working with business, community, special interest, and multi-stakeholder groups
  • WHMIS Certificate – provided by employer
  • First Aid Level I with CPR C
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered

Hours of Work

Guaranteed 35 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and eligible for flex time. This position may be required to attend some evening and weekend meetings / events. This position is eligible for part-time Work-From-Home consideration.

Salary

Wage rate in 3 steps as per the Collective Agreement between the CVRD and CUPE Local 358, $41.90 - $43.19 - $44.43 per hour (January 1, 2023 rates). Benefits are included as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
