General Information

Casual Rink Patrol opportunities are available at the Kerry Park Recreation Centre within the South Cowichan Recreation Division of the Community Services Department at the Cowichan Valley Regional District. Reporting to the Manager, South Cowichan Recreation and supervised by the Programs & Marketing Coordinator, the Rink Patrol: assists with developing, planning, and implementing a wide variety of activities including public skates, birthday parties and special events.

 

Duties include:

  1. Ensures the ice surface is safe
  2. Supervises skaters on the ice ensuring a fun and safe environment
  3. Enforces rules and regulations following policies and procedures
  4. Hands out and receives rental skates upon return as well as brings out and puts away skating frames and toys and other equipment.
  5. Monitors supplies and program needs including performing inventory
  6. Operates the arena’s sound system, making session announcements
  7. Responds to First Aid situations
  8. May instruct specific programs.

Qualifications

  • Must be 14 years of age or older
  • Experience with performing inventory and instructing programs would be considered assets
  • A valid First Aid with CPR certificate
  • Ability to skate competently
  • Ability to respond and communicate effectively with the public and co-workers
  • Ability to maintain a friendly, courteous, professional manner
  • Ability to effectively enforce rules and regulations
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team

Hours of Work

This casual opportunity has no guaranteed hours of work. Casual hours of work are scheduled based on operational need and will be required to work a flexible variety of shifts including days & evenings on weekdays, weekends, statutory holidays, and school professional development days. 

Salary

This position is compensated at $20.37 per hour (2023 rate), which is $17.38 per hour plus an additional 17.2% pay in lieu of benefits, vacation and statutory holidays, as per the Non-Union Wage Scale.
