The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates to work as an Adventure Camp Leader at the Kerry Park Recreation Centre for summer 2023. Working under the supervision of the Programs & Marketing Coordinator, Adventure Camp Leaders provide direct leadership, instruction and supervision in a varied and comprehensive program for children ages 5 – 12. There is an educational component to daily activities plus encouragement to become more active and promoting healthier lifestyles. The adventure camp program is facilitated both on-site and off-site and candidates will be expected to drive groups of children to off-site venues.

• Preferred candidates are enrolled in post secondary education in a related field.
• A first aid with child CPR certificate is required and a Class 4 BC drivers' license is preferred.
• Lifeguard certification and waterfront certification would be assets.
• Theoretical and/or practical experience developing, promoting and leading recreation programs and experience leading and supervising children ages 5-12 is required.
• Knowledge of programming for summer camps is also required.
• The successful candidate is enthusiastic, energetic and enjoys working with children.
• Successful candidates also possess effective organizational skills and the ability to:
  • Establish and maintain a respectful, fun relationship with children while maintaining a position of authority.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, managers, and the general public.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing when communicating with children, parents and supervisors including listening and following direction.
  • Work independently as well as a member of a team.
• Preference will be given to candidates aged 15-30 years as per the Canada Summer Jobs Program through Service Canada, however candidates outside of this age range will be considered.

This position is available for a period of 10 weeks commencing June 26, 2023 and continuing until September 1, 2023, subject to enrolment and funding. Hours of work are 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

This temporary position is unionized (CUPE Local 358), and is compensated at $27.19 per hour, which is $23.75 per hour plus 6% pay in lieu of vacation, 6% pay in lieu of benefits and 2.5% pay in lieu of statutory holidays. Should it not be possible to hire a fully qualified applicant with a Class 4 Driver’s License this position may instead be filled at a wage rate of $24.75 per hour which includes the additional 14.5% in-lieu amount included.
