General Information

This regular full time Heavy-Duty Mechanic position is available in Solid Waste Operations within the Recycling and Waste Management Division of the Operations Department. Reporting to the Manager-Solid Waste Operations, the Heavy-Duty Mechanic contributes to the effective operation of CVRD recycling facilities by performing day-to-day repairs, regular maintenance of the heavy fleet, mechanical equipment and buildings to optimize efficiencies including performing inspections and welding and supervises maintenance staff. The work is performed with a focus on safety to ensure that the facilities as a whole operate in a safe, efficient manner in accordance with the CVRD’s OH&S program.

Qualifications

  • Secondary School Graduation or equivalency
  • Basic Keyboarding and Computer Training
  • Supervisor’s training
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience:
  1. Working as journeyman Heavy-Duty Mechanic in a heavy industrial setting
  2. Performing repairs, maintenance, and inspections of heavy industrial equipment and maintaining the related servicing requirements
  3. Working with and on commercial trucks and heavy industrial equipment; preference will be given to candidates with experience working with waste collection trucks
  4. Fabricating, welding, cutting, torching & grinding
  5. Using and safely handling the power and hand tools used to perform this work
  • Experience supervising staff
  • Experience using maintenance scheduling software is preferred.
  • Certification in Heavy Duty Mechanics as a Journeyman (or interprovincial Red Seal Equivalent)
  • Foundations training in hydraulics
  • Valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement
  • Level “C” welding certificate
  • First Aid and CPR certificates
  • Skid Steer Operator Safety Training certificate from an accredited institution – employer provided
  • Front End Loader Operator Safety Training certificate from an accredited institution – employer provided
  • Excavator Operator Safety Training certificate from an accredited institution – employer provided
  • Forklift Operator Safety Training certificate from an accredited institution – employer provided
  • Aerial Man Lift Operator Safety Training certificate from an accredited institution – employer provided
  • Telehandler Operator Safety Training certificate from an accredited institution – employer provided
  • Fall Protection Training – employer provided
  • Confined Space training – employer provided
  • Traffic Control Person Training - employer provided
  • WHMIS  – employer provided
  • Automotive electronic diagnostic training is preferred
  • Foundation training as a Millwright or a Millwright certificate would be an asset

Hours of Work

This regular full time position is guaranteed 40 hours of work per week. Shifts are scheduled based on operational need. The successful applicant must be available to work a flexible schedule that includes a variety of days and hours per week.

Salary

These positions are unionized (USW Local 1-1937) with a Step 1 wage rate of $39.56 per hour and a Step 2 wage rate of $41.89 per hour (2022 wage rates).
