General Information

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates to work as a Planning Assistant with Community Planning and Development Services in the Land Use Services Department. Reporting to the Manager, Community Planning and the Manager, Development Services, the Planning Assistant supports planning activities. Specifically, the Planning Assistant will:  assist with review/research and updating of community planning policies; working with internal departments and external agencies; prepare reports for use by staff and elected officials; assist with community engagement activities; support the review of development applications, working with applicants and agencies; respond to public enquiries; prepare reports for use by staff and elected officials; and may assist Development Services with processing of applications and community engagement activities undertaken by the Community Planning Division.


  • Preferred candidates will be enrolled in a post-secondary Community Planning, Geography or related program, and will have a demonstrated interest in land use planning and enjoy working with the public.
  • A valid Class 5 BC driver’s license is required.
  • The successful candidate is proficient with Microsoft Office and possesses the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; and, exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with members of the public, CVRD staff and CVRD Board members.
  • Expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Adobe Creative Suite products would be considered assets.
  • To qualify for this position candidates must be young people aged 15-30 years as per the Canada Summer Jobs Program through Service Canada.

Hours of Work

This position is available for a period of 17 weeks commencing on May 2, 2022 and continuing until August 26, 2022, subject to funding. Hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. 


This temporary position is unionized (CUPE Local 358), and is compensated at $21.88 per hour (2021 rate). Additionally, this position will receive 14% in lieu of benefits, statutory holidays and vacation, bringing the compensation to $24.94 per hour.
